How to Remain in Jesus

7 Practices for Staying Spiritually Connected—Whether You're Just Starting or Growing Deeper

Remaining in Jesus is one of the most beautiful invitations He gives us. In John 15, He uses the image of a vine and branches to show how deeply connected He wants to be with us—not just in belief, but in daily life. For those new to Christianity, this might feel unfamiliar, even abstract. For those who have walked with Jesus for years, it might be a timely reminder to slow down and draw near again.

So what does it actually look like to remain in Jesus—especially in the chaos, busyness, or even dryness of life? Below are seven practices that help us stay close to Him. These are not rules to follow—they’re relational rhythms that help us live with Jesus at the centre.

Practice 1: Stay Rooted in the Word

Remaining in Jesus begins with remaining in His Word. The Bible isn’t just information—it’s a living connection to Christ Himself. As you read Scripture, you meet the heart of Jesus, allowing His truth to shape your thoughts, decisions, and responses.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
The Bible is how we begin to hear God’s voice. It may feel overwhelming at first, but don’t worry—you don’t have to understand everything to begin. Start small. Choose a Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John) and read a few verses each day. Let yourself ask questions, and invite Jesus to show you who He is.

If you’re seasoned:
Don’t let familiarity dull your wonder. Scripture is living and active. Slow down. Meditate. Read less, reflect more. Let His Word expose your heart, shape your thoughts, and deepen your love for Him.

Try this: Read a short Gospel passage each day. Ask, “What does this show me about Jesus, and how can I respond?

Practice 2: Develop a Conversational Prayer Life

Prayer is more than scheduled words—it’s a living dialogue with Jesus throughout your day. He invites your honesty, not your perfection. Talk to Him in the quiet, in the chaos, and in the ordinary. And just as importantly, pause to listen.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
Start by talking to Jesus like you would a close friend. Thank Him. Tell Him how you’re feeling. Ask for help. Then pause for a moment and be still—just being with Him.

For those who have been following Jesus for some time:
Move from routine to relationship. Don’t let your prayer life become a monologue or a to-do list. Create space for silence. Listen more. Talk with Him throughout your day, not just in the morning.

Try this: Set a daily reminder to pause and pray: “Jesus, thank You for being near. Help me stay connected to You.”

Practice 3: Worship Personally and Frequently

Worship realigns our hearts with who Jesus is, it's more than singing—it’s a heart response to God’s worth. It lifts our focus off ourselves and helps us see Jesus clearly.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
Worship might feel unfamiliar. That’s okay. Begin by simply thanking God for something good in your life. Listen to a worship song and let the lyrics guide your heart. Worship is less about sound and more about surrender.

If you're seasoned in your faith journey:
Bring worship into your every day—not just church. Let gratitude rise even in hard times. Use worship to recalibrate your soul when distractions or discouragements creep in.

Try this: Create a personal worship playlist and play it during quiet moments, walks, or while doing daily tasks.

Practice 4: Obey His Teaching

“If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love…” – John 15:10

Obedience isn’t about control—it’s about closeness. Jesus’ commands are invitations to freedom, not burdens. As we learn to follow His ways, we experience more of His love and guidance.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
Start with simple steps. Forgive someone. Speak kindly. Choose honesty. As you read the Bible and sense God asking something of you—try it. You’ll discover that obedience leads to joy.

If you've been in the Lord's service for years:
Obedience is still the mark of maturity. Let Jesus’ commands refine your character, not just your actions. Pay attention to the small nudges of the Spirit—those every day moments when you’re invited to love, serve, or surrender.

Try this: Begin your day asking, “Lord, what are You inviting me to do today in obedience to Your Word?”

Practice 5: Stay Connected to the Body of Christ

Abiding in Jesus was never meant to be a solo journey. Christianity is personal, but it’s never private. We need each other. Spiritual growth happens best in community—with people who can pray for us, challenge us, encourage us, and walk with us.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
Join a small group or church community. Don’t worry about having it all together—none of us do. Show up as you are, and let others help you grow.

For mature believers rooted in Christ:
Move beyond attendance to involvement. Lead, mentor, or simply invest deeper in relationships. You don’t graduate from needing community.

Try this: Commit to a small group, join a serving team, and build trusted spiritual friendships.

Practice 6: Practice His Presence

Jesus is with you—in every place, at every moment. Acknowledge His presence throughout your day.

Abiding in Him means learning to carry that awareness into every corner of life—from work to home, from routines to interruptions.

If you're new on the Christian journey:
Begin by reminding yourself, “Jesus is with me.” Whisper it when you're anxious or unsure. His presence is a comfort and a strength.

If you’re seasoned:
Cultivate deeper attentiveness to Jesus throughout the day. Let His presence guide your emotions, actions, and choices—not just your morning quiet time.

Try this: Before each task or interaction, pray quietly: “Jesus, You are here. Help me walk with You.”

Practice 7: Invite the Work of the Holy Spirit

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth.” – John 14:16–17

The Holy Spirit is not just a comforter—He is the power of God living within us! He teaches us, convicts us, strengthens us, and boldly empowers us to live and witness for Jesus. We are not called to walk the Christian life in our own strength, but through the anointing and infilling of the Holy Spirit.

If you’re just beginning your journey with Christ:
Pray boldly: “Holy Spirit, I invite You to fill me. Baptise me in Your power. Lead me into all truth. Help me follow Jesus with fire in my heart!” Even if you're unsure what to expect, come with faith and a willing heart. God delights to fill His children (Luke 11:13).

If you’ve walked with the Lord for a while:
Don’t grow passive—stay hungry. Yield to the Spirit daily. Ask Him to stretch you, speak through you, and stir up the gifts He has placed inside you (2 Timothy 1:6). Cry out for fresh fire and deeper surrender. Stay teachable, available, and full of faith.

Try this each morning: “Holy Spirit, fill me afresh today. Empower me to walk in step with You. Let Your presence overflow in my life and keep me aligned with the heart of Jesus.”

Conclusion: Living Connected to God is a Wonderful Invitation, Not a Checklist

In John 15, Jesus doesn’t hand us a to-do list—He offers us Himself. The call to “Remain in Me” is an invitation to closeness, trust, and dependence. Everything we need—life, peace, strength, fruitfulness—flows from staying connected to Him. Whether you’re just beginning your faith journey or decades in, this is where life is found:

So stay close. Stay connected. Stay in Him.
